I don"t know if it"s the rough singing style, the suacy radiate in the eye, or the light removal of their clothes, but there"s something about Miss Polly Rae and her Hurly Burly Girlys that the critics appear to like. "In a wasted hold up I have seen a lot of strippers, trimming from outrageous clubs on Times Square […] to the soullessly striking party offering by the late Paul Raymond at his scandalous Revuebar," explains Charles Spencer in the Telegraph, with excellent if foolish frankness. "Miss Polly Rae, however, presides over the majority rational and delectable mime show I have ever encountered."
But afterwards the ethereal change of mime – titillating innocently – was regularly the hint of the genre, even prior to the stream lapse to fashion. "The word "burlesque" is obviously dictated to lend a sure postmodern irony to the really old art of ecdysis," says the Guardian"s Michael Billington (whose own make make use of of of the word "ecdysis" lends a sure postmodern irony to his make make use of of of the word "clearly"). "To be pedantic," Billington continues, "burlesque was a unruly brew of disrobing and double-entendre that flourished in the US from 1900 to 1935. But the hint of it was that humerous entertainment was churned with carnality."
And in this respect, Miss Polly Rae has obviously delivered the goods. "Whether as a nun sashaying to It"s a Sin or writhing in room dressing gown to a slow, amorous version of Michael Jackson"s Bad," enthuses Scott Matthewman in the Stage, "Rae displays a clarity of humour each bit as disobedient as the light stealing of clothing."
Meanwhile, the Mail"s Quentin Letts was similarly enamoured. "The contours are amazing, as are a small of the contortions," he gasps. "A dancer"s slow, near-naked splits creates one"s eyes H2O similar to lychees. The high kicking seems double-hinged. Yet, at the risk of sounding similar to one of those severe intellectuals," (Ah yes, I thought we would be removing to them) "I have to contend that the Hurly Burly Show is inventive rather than lewd. It"s relief sleaze."
As to either that can be called a great thing, the critics waver. "Some might disagree the prolongation is demeaning to women," says Billington, but being one of them. Instead he considers it, though not "high art", a "rousing jubilee of the womanlike form". Which is excellent by Letts as well. "A integrate of touches I could have finished without," he quibbles, "a sketch of the Pope is ripped and the girls fake to call cocaine. Otherwise […] this is a slick, well-paced night."
And, naturally, Rae"s luminary pals would lend towards to agree. "Polly is a unusual actor and let"s only contend I am feeling a small prohibited underneath the collar!" Kylie Minogue, 41, told the News of the World with a bland, roughly press-release-like economy of style. Meanwhile, her sister, clothing-removal consultant Dannii Minogue, concurred on Twitter. "Saw preview of Miss Polly Rae mime show last night," she typed. "We all giggled, clapped and were shocked; so really racy!" Clearly she"s never been on a night out with Charles Spencer.
Do say: Finally, a long-lost amorous art form earnings to the West End!
Don"t say: Anyone wish to go get a massage?
The reviews reviewed: Good purify filth.
